The long awaited regeneration of New Lynn began with New Lynn’s new transport hub which was completed in September 2010 . The work included a kilometre-long  underground trench for the railway corridor, double tracking and an award-winning transport interchange. Work continues on the transformation with the inclusion of the Merchant Quarter, adjacent to the New Lynn transport interchange, which will include 7,000m² of commercial and retail space, a new parking building and medical centre. New Lynn’s roadsides and surroundings are also getting a spruce up.

“We have supplied 18 x KS100 Trench Boxes, approximately 64m of shoring equipment, to Downer NZ for the development of large planter boxes along Great North Road and Memorial Drive,” says Jarrad Christie, Hire Operations Coordinator for Trench Shoring New Zealand.

Each planter box is approximately 40m long and will eventually house fully-grown trees. These boxes are being completely concreted and blocked in to prevent the root systems of the trees from disrupting the road surfaces.

“As the planter boxes run parallel to Great North Road, Downer’s were required to shore the sides of the trenches preventing collapses for their workers and to keep the road and footpath intact,” adds Jarrad. “Often shoring equipment is used for laying pies, water and sewer, but in this case our systems were used for a different situation offering Downer’s people a safe work zone right next to a main road.”

Great North Road carries considerable volumes of daily traffic making shoring essential for the Downer’s staff to operate safely in the deep trenches to create homes for trees, that when planted, will add to the transformation of New Lynn into a modern urban centre.
